The past lives of the DMF

The July 2019 edition of Doctor Music Festival has been crowned The Reincarnation Edition. It was named this way due to all the previous lives the festival has enjoyed in years gone by.

Here you can discover everything about what these previous editions entailed, where they took place and what went on.

The festival draws it's karma form all of these previous pioneering editions which transformed the way we experience live music in our country for ever.

Doctor Music Festival 1996

The first edition of Doctor Music festival was born thanks to the vision of Neo Sala and the experience of the promotor he founded, Doctor Music Concerts. The idea was to create the first big open-air music festival in our country.

Doctor Music was not only the first to bring internationally renowned tour concerts to Spain, but it was also the first festival in our country to aspire to be compared to such legendary events as the likes of Woodstock, something which was unthinkable in Spain at the end of the 20th century.

More than 30 thousand festivalgoers were privileged enough to witness the birth of “The Festival of the Cow” in the Escalarre valley in Lleida.

Doctor Music Festival made a show-stopping debut, bringing together many unforgettable and legendary names such as David Bowie, Lou Reed, Patti Smith, Iggy Pop, Blur, Massive Attack, Moby, Suede, Bad Religion, Neneh Cherry, Sepultura, Slayer and Underworld.

Some of these artists were practically unknown before they played at that pioneering edition of Doctor Music Festival. Today they are global super-stars! Discovering unknown talent is something which has characterised all editions of this festival.

Doctor Music Festival 1997

After the overwhelming success of the first edition, Doctor Music Festival 1997 had set standards very high. Matching this success was already a tall feat, but we went one step further and exceeded all expectations by improving the festival’s organisation, as well as offering a line-up that was just as amazing as the previous edition.
Thanks to the festival’s great reputation, the “Festival of the Cow” managed to attract the best national and international artists in the business, once again offering a jaw-dropping line-up.

In 1997, we saw our stages light up with performances from Alice Cooper, David Byrne, Echo & The Bunnymen, Gary Moore, Extremoduro, Megadeth, NOFX, Rage Against The Machine, Sheryl Crow, Simple Minds, Sinead O’Connor, Skunk Anansie, Steve Winwood, The Stranglers, Texas, Ziggy Marley, Ani DiFranco, Los Piratas, Placebo, Aphex Twin and Carl Cox.

Doctor Music Festival 1998

The Spanish ‘Woodstock’, this is how our festival began to be known familiarly. Two editions were enough for international critique to position us up there as one of the most important music festivals in history. What an honour and what a responsibility!

Once again, the Pyrenees mountains played witness to a constellation of national and international musical superstars that no other festival would be capable of matching in many years.

Pulp, Beastie Boys, The Verve, Garbage, Rosendo, Nick Cave & The Bad Seeds, Deep Purple, Iggy Pop, Love of Lesbian, Richie Sambora, The Corrs, Mojinos Escozíos, Dave Mathew’s Band, Josh Wink, Barricada... And the immeasurable patriarch, Bob Dylan.

Doctor Music Festival 2000

After a well-deserved year off, Doctor Music Festival struck back in 2000 faced with a double challenge. First was a change of location, moving our cows to new pastures in the mountains, more specifically to Asturias, in La Morgal (Llaner). And secondly, as always, there was the challenge of living up to the success and high standards of the artistic offering of the previous three editions.

Once again, we succeeded in bringing together a top line-up, showcasing both famous musical legends and new talents who would soon show the world just how far they would go.

Beck, Lou Reed, Ani DiFranco, Dream Theater, Fangoria, Pet Shop Boys, 7 Notas 7 Colores, Groove Armada, Dover, Paul Weller, M-Clan, Molotov, Frankie Knuckles, Rinôçérôse, Chumbawamba and the very first performance of Muse in our country.
